Udzungwa Mountains


Udzungwa is the largest and with most biodiversity and a chain of a dozen large forest-swathed mountains that rise majestically from the flat coastal scrub of eastern Tanzania. Known collectively as the Eastern Arc Mountains, this archipelago of isolated massifs has also been dubbed as the African Galápagos for its treasure-trove of endemic plants and animals.

The most familiar being the delicateAfrican violet. The Udzungwa Mountains National Park & is a unique and pristine wilderness, mountains, forested with a great altitude range of forest. The park, located in the Iringa and Morogoro region in south-central Tanzania, is home to primates and known for its treasure of high biodiversity of plants and animals. Udzungwa, in particular, is of considerable scientific importance for its forest-swathed wilderness, while Mikumi offers a gentle savannah wildlife experience. One of the Tanzania’s most beautiful wilderness area, the Udzungwa Mountains have a high forest area and a haven for nickers.The mountain are a part of the Eastern African area chain of ancient mountain ranges from the Uluguru mountains to Udzungwa mountains. Udzungwa’s wildlife is rich containing Tanzania largest variety of primates ten species including four that are not found anywhere else, these are the same red 1010bus monkey, the matundu galago and the mountain Warf galago (bush baby). Other primates include black white monkeys blue monkeys and thick tailed gulago, over 250 bird species have been recorded and over 1300 species of buttery,

Part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a series of mountains ranging from the Taita Hills in Southern Kenya to Makambako Gap in South Central Tanzania, the major park attraction is biologically diverse plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, butterfly and insects. Many of these are found nowhere else in the world. Humidity from the nearby Indian Ocean and the sudden change of altitude precipitate constant rain, resulting in spectacular waterfalls and intriguing natural caves. Udzungwa is ideal for those who are fit and enjoy walking and climbing. Its centerpiece is the 170 m Sanje Waterfall.
